Transform Your Balcony into a Tropical Garden

A step-by-step guide to creating a lush balcony garden in Thailand's climate.

A balcony garden does more than look good — it reduces indoor temperature by 2–3°C and improves air quality. Thailand's climate is ideal for growing herbs and tropical plants year-round.

Best plants for Thai balconies

  • Herbs: Thai basil, lemongrass, galangal (use daily in cooking)
  • Shade plants: Pothos, snake plant, ZZ plant (low maintenance)
  • Flowers: Frangipani (plumeria), jasmine, orchids
  • Edible: Chili peppers, spring onions, lime trees in pots

Setup budget

Start with ฿2,000–5,000 for pots, soil, and starter plants from Chatuchak or Or Tor Kor market. Add a drip irrigation timer (฿500) if your balcony gets afternoon sun.
